Construction works of a garments park in Mirsarai economic zone of Chittagong are likely to begin in December this year.
Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office, informed this during a land lease agreement at a city hotel on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) and Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Export Association (BGMEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) over giving lease of 500 acres of land in Mirsarai economic zone.
The MoU has been signed in order to implement the Prime Minister's directives to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (DGs) including progress in the country's economicdevelopment, setting up 100 economic zones by 2030, income generation for 10 million people and additional production worth US dollar 40 billion annually by 2030.
In the signing programme, the BGMEA informed that it has a plan to invest US dollar 2 billion in Mirsarai Economic Zone to create employment opportunity for nearly five lakh people.
BGMEA president M Siddiqur Rahman and Abul Kalam Azad from BEZA signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides. At that time, Siddiur Rahman handed over a cheque for Tk 25 crore to AK Azad.
In his speech, Azad said despite different crises including shortage of gas, power, capital, land and labour, Bangladesh achieved 7.2 percent growth.
"Bangladesh has become a middle income country with the increase of our GDP growth in last 10 years," he said.
